A Shocking Wake-Up Call About Synthetic Dyes
I just finished watching “To Dye For: The Documentary,” with my boyfriend and I’m still reeling from the revelations about synthetic dyes in our everyday products. This powerful documentary, born from parents’ personal struggle with their child’s sensitivity to artificial dyes, serves as a crucial exposé of an issue hiding in plain sight.
The filmmakers’ journey from concerned parents to investigative documentarians is both personal and profound. Their interviews with leading experts and scientists present alarming evidence about the impact of synthetic dyes on our health, particularly concerning children’s behavior, development, and overall wellbeing.
What absolutely floored me was discovering how these dyes are lurking in the most unexpected places. While I naively thought artificial dyes were mainly in obvious products like colorful candies and sports drinks, I was shocked to find them in:
Marshmallows (why do they need to be artificially white?)
Hand soaps and body washes (even the clear ones!)
White frosting
Medications and vitamins
Toothpaste
“Natural” looking breads
Vanilla ice cream
Pet food
Pickles
Even some “white” cheese products!
What’s most disturbing is how unnecessary these dyes are – they serve no functional purpose other than aesthetic appeal. They’re not preservatives, they don’t enhance flavor, they’re purely cosmetic. Yet manufacturers are adding these potentially harmful chemicals to products that don’t even need to be colored!
After watching this eye-opening documentary, I’m making immediate changes in my household. I’ve already begun checking labels and clearing out products containing artificial dyes (Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 1, etc.). I’ve become that person in the store reading every label, and I’m not apologizing for it. When I think about how these unnecessary additives might affect our health, especially children’s health, those extra few minutes checking labels seem like a small price to pay.
I’m sharing this information with everyone I know – family, friends, and even my social media network. It’s crucial that more people understand what they’re consuming and feeding their children. The simple act of avoiding synthetic dyes could potentially prevent various health and behavioral issues.
The most powerful takeaway is that this is a preventable problem – we have alternatives. Natural food colorings exist, and many companies are already making the switch. As consumers, our choices can drive change in the industry.
If you watch one documentary this year, make it “To Dye For.” Your perspective on food additives will never be the same, and you’ll be empowered to make better choices for yourself and your family.

Amazing documentary! Must watch!
Such an eye opener! Great documentary! It really makes you think about what you are feeding yourself and your family. We have made permanent positive changes now because of this documentary! This should be shared with everyone because itâs such an important subject and everyone should be educated on dyes and the effects they can have on us!

Highly recommend!!
This film does an amazing job showcasing how harmful synthetic dyes are. Every person, adult and child, should be informed that synthetic dyes can cause cancer, behavioral problems, and more, and be able to make an informed decision about consumption. Itâs quite concerning how long it has taken for public awareness, that these are still in our foods when they are banned in other countries and their harmful effects have been know about for many years. My family and I have been dye free for 3 years now, so I didnât learn anything I didnât already know due to my own extensive research on the topic, but I still enjoyed watching the documentary, seeing others stories, and hearing from professionals who are fighting for the right thing. Great introduction to bring awareness about the ingredients being put into food, dyes arenât the only harmful ingredients being used. Everyone should watch this, you wonât be disappointed! Share with everyone you know!

Well worth the money!
A lot of excellent information in this documentary. I would have liked to see more of this stuff come out, proof that we need to clean all the processed junk out of our foods.

A Must-Watch for Everyone â Thank You, Whitney and Brandon!
I just finished watching this documentary, and itâs definitely something people should see. Huge thanks to Whitney and Brandon for putting this together â itâs super informative and easy to follow.
What I really like about this film is how it gets people thinking about whatâs actually in our food. Itâs a great conversation starter and makes you want to pay more attention to ingredients when youâre shopping.
Also, a big thank you to all the families who shared their stories. Your experiences added so much to the documentary and really helped drive home how important this issue is.
If you havenât seen it, I recommend checking it out. Itâs a great way to start thinking about what goes into the food we eat.
Thanks again to Whitney, Brandon, and everyone involved for putting this together!

This documentary is a MUST WATCH! Let’s do better FOR OUR CHILDREN!
This documentary is a must watch for everyone. I was literally crying in the first 5 minutes. So incredibly emotional. Parts of each of their stories are our story. Iâm fired up to help make change. I really hope the pediatrician that told me my sonâs behavior was from my âbad parentingâ sees this!! Maybe I should mail her the DVD!! My son didnât act out at school, but he was Jekyll and Hyde at home. Completely inconsolable at times. Now that weâve removed Red 40 heâs a changed boy. He is 7 and has been off of Red 40 for 4 years. He is an advocate for himself because he knows how the synthetic dyes make him feel, and he doesn’t like feeling that way. Iâm shaking my head that we havenât removed all synthetic dyes, but we will now. We are seeing the yellow behaviors now as well. It feels so validating knowing we are not alone and Iâm not crazy or a bad parent. THANK YOU for helping raise awareness.
