WHAT MADE IN SEARCH OF DIFFERENT & WHY IT STILL MATTERS TODAY
Today, in the age of Internet TV, the home viewer has illimitable options for consuming content on multiple screens anywhere at anytime. We have more documentaries than we have hours in a lifetime, which was a cornerstone and successful strategy of Netflix.
In Search of was produced at a time when television programs like Nova, The Ascent of Man, Wild Kingdom, Jacques Coustea were being consumed by households and there was a search to learn more and seek out deeper meaning in life. Leonard Nimoy, like Rod Serling, was the right host and enigmatic voice to keep us spellbound for the show’s duration. The show ran from 1977 to 1982 and produced 144 episodes running 6 Seasons. It was a success. Moreover, fans of In Search of were dedicated to the weekly half hour segments that tackled controversial and contentious subject matter, hence the show’s disclaimer:
“This series presents information based in part on theory and conjecture. The producer’s purpose is to suggest some possible explanations, but not necessarily the only ones, to the mysteries we will examine.”
And the conclusion of each episode:
âLost civilizations. Extraterrestrials. Myths and monsters. Missing Persons. Magic. Witchcraft. Unexplained Phenomena. In Search of⦠cameras are traveling the world, seeking out these great mysteries. This program was the result of the work of scientists, researchers and a group of highly skilled technicians.â
QUALITY, PACKAGING & PRESENTATION
VEI released a more expensive and better package of the series back in 2012 that was double the price. This 2016 release is austere and does not offer any unique liner notes, episode index or any other fancy add-ons. It is a great series in a plain brown wrapper so to speak. The DVDs are stacked like pancakes in the two clam-shells. 6 discs/12 total (12 episodes per DVD).
The quality and transfer is fine and if the production quality looks inferior or odd to you it is not due to VEI. Overall I think the series for the cost is an excellent and inexpensive alternative to pricey box sets.
Please note: This set does not include Mitch Pileggi revival/reboot produced in 2002.

LOOKING BACK, WE’RE STILL IN SEARCH OF…
It has been 35 years since the original In Search of show’s conclusion. Leonard Nimoy passed away in 2015. Chupacabras, extraterrestrial life, paranormal activity, ghosts and mysteries, myths and conspiracies abound to this day – some debunked since the show. We still haven’t found Hoffa or Bigfoot for that matter, or still don’t have all the answers to the death of Marilyn Monroe or Glenn Miller.
What does matter is this show belongs to a special moment in television history when our concentration and questions were focused on something greater than us and the investigative quality of programming narrated by a one-of-a-kind host beat out today’s reality TV and pointless social media distractions and spurious internet stories.
I will always be “In Search of” something and I hope you are too.

Good old time mystery nostalgia
Do mysterious creatures roam the Earth? Have UFOs visited us? Are there ghosts lurking in dark corners? For me this series isn’t about fact or fantasy, but rather about two different things, taking a nostalgic trip that lets my imagination escape the reality of mundane life, which is what this series does for me. As a child I used to watch random episodes of this TV show; fortunately, it has been archived into a DVD set.
I ordered what appears to be the bare bones version. Unlike previous box set incarnations, this version does not include a listing of the episodes per DVD, only the Leonard Nimoy episodes are included, each DVD is enclosed in a thin sleeve, there aren’t any extras enclosed besides the discs. The 12 DVD disc set is enclosed in a single thick plastic DVD case that does include a slipcover (though the image is the same one that is on the case). The12 DVD discs (each enclosed in sleeves) are nestled dead center of the case.
It appears that there wasn’t any remastering nor alterations done to the video and audio of the whole set. Each disc has three menus each with four episodes per menu, the show’s theme music does play throughout the menus which for some people might be annoying. I am not sure if there was an issue with the authoring of the set but there are some irregularities on some discs. There are two discs that won’t load from the first menu, regardless of the DVD player that I am using, instead they will load the second menu. The only way to load the first menu is to press the back button on the menu, if I had overlooked this irregularity, I would have believed that these discs were missing episodes.
Another issue involves two discs. Season 5 Disc 2 on the menu reads that it is Disc 3. Also, Season 6 Disc 2 on the menu reads that it is Disc 3 as well. I thought that I was missing disc 2 for seasons 5 and 6, I found out that all of the episodes are included, for some reason this error exists. At this point in time I have not viewed every disc, I am not certain if I will encounter glitches, skipping, episodes that were cut short or any other technical issues.
Leonard Nimoy, who is a perfect host, adds seriousness to the otherworldly topics of the show. For me this is a good nostalgic show that is worth owning.

Pure nostalgia
Remembered watching this show as a kid and loved it. It really made you think about something you probably wouldn’t have given much thought about without seeing an episode about the topic. I remembered episodes about Bigfoot, a money pit, DB Cooper, missing princes in England, and other topics. However you believed on the issue the episode was mostly fair and balanced and made you think. I loved this show and I loved Nimoy though I don’t think I remembered him as Spock back then. The reason to buy this set is purely for nostalgia and to relive the past though briefly. The video quality is poor. It looks like it was copied off an old vhs tape. Frequently there was what looked like a hair in the image like it was on the lense… Seeing the 70s look again, either with the clothing, vehicles or hair styles was a bit jarring. Serious trip down memory lane for me. In that sense this set was worth the purchase. I don’t regret the purchase just for the nostalgia reason. However, the video quality is bad. Also many things have changed, new evidence come to light, and people have recanted stories they told that some episodes were based on. Unless you watched this series back in the day I just really couldn’t suggest purchasing it. As much as I enjoyed seeing it again this isn’t a product I will hold on to and it will be heading to either a 2nd hand video store where I will sell it or it will find its way to Goodwill. I loved the nostalgia of seeing this series again and hearing Nimoys voice work in this once again but this set was really for a jog down memory lane and now I will pass this set on as it’s just not a keeper for me. Giving it 5 stars just for the memories but if you didn’t see the series back in the day I would look for something more modern and better video quality.

I am very glad to have this show as part of my home DVD collection now. I remember it from reruns when I was a kid. It impressed me as being knowledgeable and entertaining and indeed well done. It came in great time in great condition with what does indeed promise to be all of the episodes on the DVDs. I am very thankful to the seller for being so efficient with this show as such. I know I will enjoy watching it again.

Oh my goodness, this is great. Every episode that counts,no need for the deluxe version with the new series included as these are the ones that count, trust me when I say that if you were a fan you will be an even bigger one after getting this.

Really good quality of the old program and the dvd’s are in sleeves which are much easier to deal with.

It’s great to see these old episodes and Leonard again! The picture quality isn’t the best, but neither were our TVs until the 2000’s. Accept it for what it is.

Loved this show during it’s original run and then in reruns during the 90’s. Sadly this series has not been restored, it looks exactly the way I remember it- a third generation film print put on video tape and now on DVD. The show is so interesting to me that I’m willing to look past the video and audio quality. Glad I didn’t pay more than 30 bucks for the complete series of 144 episodes. Good show though.
