Intriguing Powerful Depiction of Gildaâs Love For Her Country
Helen Mirren NEVER disappoints!!! Her performance is phenomenal! This movie gives you inside into her personal struggles with health as well as her emotional struggles with the war and the great loss of young men in battle.
I would truly recommend this as a must see!

Interesting Movie
After having heard of or read about this historical figure for years, it was interesting to see this movie about her life and involvement in the conflict in Israel. Although I know it is a dramatization, it’s still a fairly good depiction and gives you a good sense of the hard decisions she had to make at a time when it was difficult to be in that place.

Lots Of Cigarettes Smoked Back In The Day!
As a history buff and as a little girl who looked up to Golda Meir as well as Queen Elizabeth as role models because I knew Girls could rule a country or a kingdom just as well or nay better than most men I was intrigued by Golda. I find it most amusing that one of my favorite actresses of all time played both Queen Elizabeth and Golda Meir!
So as a history enthusiast I watched this film but was taken aback that the cigarette smoke seemed to be the leading actor and actress in this story! The fact that everyone was smoking like there would be no tomorrow and perhaps if Golda Meir hadnât had the heart of a King there wouldnât have been no tomorrow really made me so thankful for how far we have come in knowing the dangers of cigarettes and second hand smoke. I just shook my head as Golda was hooked up to oxygen and still puffing away!
I love Helen Mirren dearly and I think she did a good job in her role as Golda even going as far as the prosthetic nose. I think the director should have let Miss Mirren put her full weight into the character as she did portraying Queen Elizabeth and she wouldâve been outstanding as Golda Meir not just merely Good in the role. The film has some sad but meaningful metaphors in it like the birds she sees in the sky while sheâs out smoking up top on a roof and then at the end of the movie where thereâs dead birds lining the hallway. I took these to be as the souls of all the soldiers who gave their lives during the Yom Kippur War 1973.
Liev Shrieber was good as U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and he and Miss Mirren had several good scenes together. Miss Mirren however wasnât allowed to put her incredible acting ability to really get down into the soul of Golda Meir. There were a few things like when she squeezed her hands together so tightly they bled because of the soldiers lives lost that she knew she was responsible for or the touching scene when she knew the son of one of her stenographers had been killed.
But I found it hard to believe just how much Golda Meir actually smoked! I had read once she was a literal chain-smoker up to 70 cigarettes per day! But I was also taken aback how smoking seem to be the treatment for anxiety back then because there was so much cigarette smoke it almost made me want to reach for my inhaler just watching the film! And were all those closeup shots of ashtrays needed? Perhaps they were metaphorically significant?
Overall itâs a good film. Would I watch it again? Probably not. But I did enjoy watching a film about a significant time in my lifetime that things couldâve went sideways and the world as we know it may not exist now except for the ruthless courage and heart of a king that PM Golda Meir possessed. I loved it when she told all the men that she wasnât going to get underneath the table but she wasnât going to stop them from doing so! And that she was no longer that scared little girl in Ukraine hiding from the Soviets. She would make an army of widows and orphans if she had toâ¦that does take the heart of a King to achieve that and the aftermath that follows.
Funny how History repeats itself as here we are 50 years later and here we go again.

Fascinating movie if the subject interests you
Iâm old enough to remember the Yom Kippur War, but I was quite young and didnât have a real understanding of what took place or what the human side of it all was. Helen Mirren, while lacking the lively warmth in her portrayal that can be seen and felt in news coverage of Prime Minister Meirâs speeches and actions, and that is so clear today in the old footage, is nonetheless stellar in the role – because she is always stellar. Her presence in a film is a reason for me to watch it. In an era of womenâs rights and feminism, an amazing thing was true: a no-nonsense grandmother with her gray hair in a practical bun, penetrating eyes, and an ever present handbag on her arm was Prime Minister of a country that just a few years earlier had fought the Seven Days War. She was complex, flawed, tough, charming, decisive, and she loved her country. She went toe to toe with men like Kissinger when it mattered. The whole story is just incredible from all sides, extremely moving, and provides context and perspective on events today whatever your own views are. I think many people at the end of it said âI had no idea.â This is the story of a moment in time and the lone woman who was a central figure in it.
