Precocious tween Karin finds herself abandoned by her father in rural Japan. Living in a temple with her grandfather, she meets Anzu, a giant “ghost cat” and notorious layabout tasked with looking after her. Distrustful of her new guardian, Karin sabotages Anzu’s odd jobs for the townsfolk and befriends the eccentric local forest spirits. In an effort to win Karin over, Anzu accidentally makes a deal with the devil, and all Hell breaks loose.

Ghost Cat Anzu is co-directed by renowned artist Yoko Kuno, who makes her feature directorial debut, and Nobuhiro Yamashita, the acclaimed director of Linda Linda Linda. Co-produced by Shin-Ei Animation and Miyu Productions with music by legendary musician Keiichi Suzuki (EarthBound), Ghost Cat Anzu is a wildly funny ride in the countryside.

If you like anime, this is a great film!
Receive this on release day and wow was it a great anime film! Definitely a movie at rewatch so really happy. I have this on Blu-ray. I think any of the negative reviews on here are probably coming from people that don’t have a general interest in anime, I do think this would fall into that scope if you’re not into anime, you probably will not like this movie just because of the art style / dialogue that typically exists in anime. But if you have any type of anime you like, I find it quite hard to not like this movie. Definitely worth a watch!

Confusing and Strange Anime Film That I Just Didn’t Get!
🍿1/2(Out of 5)This movie is weird and hard to understand for me. Not being familiar with the intricacies of Japanese culture, this subtitled film was a visually interesting, if logically confusing, experience that was unusual, weird and hard to follow.Directed by Yōko Kuno and Nobuhiro Yamashita from a screenplay by Shinji Imaoka, (Based on the book “Ghost Cat Anzu” written by Takashi Imashiro) the anime itself is very well done if sort of mute in it’s color pallet, however the characters are wonderfully and very creatively designed. (A talking giant mushroom for example and monster of all kinds are seen.)The story is that of what appears to be a headstrong girl who has to move to rural Japan into her grandfathers home, who happens to be a ‘magical’ monk. She forms an unlikely friendship with an unpredictable supernatural cat guardian. A very large, who rides a motorbike, complete with attitude, slightly sarcastic talking cat. Why he is called ‘Ghost Cat’ – I have no idea. The sequences and transformations are bizarre and these characters actually go from worlds to worlds via flushing themselves down a broken toilet. Yup!Ultimately, it’s a story of a broken family (she is left at her grandfather by her distraught and gypsy stylized Ife of her natural father) when this girl connects with Anzu, the talking cat, and even her deceased mother and then battles evil monsters and spirits because of her love of her fears and beliefs working together to support her friends and defeat her enemies, I think. Weird.Lorenzo M.

    Give Anzu a chance!
While it’s certainly not a Ghibli film, I couldn’t stand to see it sitting with a 2-star rating, considering how lovable Anzu is. There are some unexpected darker elements to the story, but it’s ultimately a positive and cute story about bringing together family. Anzu’s no Totoro, but he might be even better – he talks! Farts! Takes your money to play pachinko! Your mileage may vary as to whether that’s an improvement from scratching up the furniture.

    Don’t compare this to Ghibli
Ghost Cat Anzu was one of my favorite discoveries of 2024. I went into it based on the trailer liking the art style and a few of the jokes that were told. It was one of the funniest movies I saw while still having a serious nature to the story about life and death. As the title says, don’t go into this film thinking it’s another Ghibli movie. For one, it’s not even made by Ghibli so I’m not sure why it started getting this comparison. The style and themes of this movie are not Ghibli. That’s not to say that if you like Ghibli movies you wouldn’t like this, but don’t go into it thinking it’s the same.
