Great series
Wonderful study of civilizations through their art. Best part is narration by Liev Schreiber (Donovan). He delivers a clear, concise story without the overly enthusiastic histrionics of many art history reviewers. Highly recommended.

We need more education in our schools!
I recently went to my high school to donate some very expensive electronics instruments. I was told that they no longer taught any high tech technical courses, only G.E.D. classes! Gratuitous Egemental Decrees! S. P. is deliberate !!! The dumbing-up of Americans!

Disappointed
Disappointed in the content, not the carrier. The original Civilization series is definitely superior. This newer series is too short, and I could’ve done without the political opinions and bias.

A program that tries, with some success, to examine a multicultural approach to ART
This is clearly a sequel to the classic, fantastic, not to be duplicated Kenneth Clark series on Art. That program had the advantage of being a single point of view from one of our great art historians. The combination of image, music and text created a unique visual masterpiece. The current program was fine, but did not live up to its predecessor. The current program tried to be more balanced. It tried to include a very inclusive examination across time and cultures. It used a variety of narrators. I enjoyed it. I thought that it added to what Lord Clark accomplished but was not up to the level of the prior program. The sound was fine, the images clear and the color excellent.

Intelligent and deeply watchable.
Excellent and beautiful series about the relationship between civilizations and art. The filmmaking is absolutely stunning and the nearration is powerful and very interesting.

Worth the purchase
The disc played well. Clean and clear. I found the content interesting. Amazon was easy to use. USPS delivered more quickly than expected.

The richnest of intellectual research and reflexion on the fundamental place of artistic expression in any civilization is beautifully expressed and demonstrated in this series.

Encore une fois, PBS nous offre une série de grande qualité. A découvrir.

An interesting view of a “civilization”; different from K. Clark or N. Ferguson.

This slow-moving series of nine 60-minute broadcasts clearly benefited from a huge budget. Shootings were made throughout the world and university professors transported thousand of kilometers to say a few sentences on screen. Cinematography is exceptional and images are beautiful. Sadly, they are also repetitive.
The series lacks in unity, the narrator having an American accent, many university experts being British, but some American or local.
Worse, the series does not seem to have a clear purpose. The content is thematic but not quite. It is chronological but not quite. The viewer ponders: is this a history of art or just an illustration of world diversity?
Thus, though clearly well intended, the series is not insubstantial but totally inconsistent. It is also a sure remedy against insomnia.
