Apollo 11 (2019)

From director Todd Douglas Miller (Dinosaur 13) comes a cinematic event 50 years in the making. Crafted from a newly discovered trove of 65mm footage, and more than 11,000 hours of uncatalogued audio recordings, Apollo 11 takes us straight to the heart of NASA’s most celebrated mission—the one that first put men on the moon, and forever made Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin into household names. Immersed in the perspectives of the astronauts, the team in Mission Control, and the millions of spectators on the ground, we vividly experience those momentous days and hours in 1969 when humankind took a giant leap into the future.

EXCELLENT COMPILATION OF HISTORIC APOLLO 11 VIDEOS
Mostly a digitized version of video recorded by NASA interspersed with videos from other sources, this documentary really took us back to Apollo 11. I recall being glued to our television at the time – this quite marvelously shows you what you weren’t seeing on TV. what was really going on behind the scenes at NASA and with the astronaut’s loved ones. Highly recommend this for anyone who is enthusiastic about historical accuracy (versus the many romanticized versions) of the American space endeavor.

    The NASA in SPACE.
I was a young lad when this happened,,, do you not Moon believers I could prove in a sentence we have been to the moon. The Chinese are also going to the Moon and India is also Moonbound. China had a spy infiltrated working at nasa all through the 60s and 70s and took off back to China with suitcases full of top secret NASA Moon information. The next day his wife was also working at nasa she was caught at the airport with three suitcases full of top secret CDs stolen from NASA. How does a feather in a ball peen hammer dropped at the same height, land on the ground at the same time? Humanly impossible to replicate on the planet Earth. So if you want to learn actual history of the greatest nation that ever existed on the planet Earth the United States of America and the NASA program, a tremendous feat of Humans Capabilitys. A Must watch!

    Amazing video
I’ve seen numerous videos of Apollo 11 and the moon landing but this is the best. Sourced from countless hours of newly discovered video and audio footage, this documentary will literally transplant you back to that hallowed event and make you experience all the awe and wonder all over again – but this time in color and not back and white. With them bringing the large screen photography to to date through modern editing, it’s like Imax had been around and recorded a documentary of the project. The images are simply stunning as is the entire production. Highly recommended.

    A harsh critic’s thoughts…
I’ve been an Apollo junky for decades. I even own nearly all the Apollo mission stock footage beginning to end (at one time available from a now mostly defunct media company called “Spacecraft Films”), and thought I had seen it all. Then this came out…
First off, this isn’t a documentary in the manner of interviews mixed with mission footage. From what I could tell, and again, I think I’ve got Apollo 11 fairly well memorized on stock footage, over 99% of the shots are from Apollo 11. That’s impressive, because many other documentaries bounce around the missions, picking and choosing the shots they like from the entire Apollo film stockpile (example, most flag planting shots are from Apollo 14, and most Saturn takeoffs are Apollo 8, etc. etc.). The only shots I noticed NOT from Apollo 11 were the Saturn V inter-stage separation shots, which were taken from the unmanned Apollo 4 mission (I suppose this is okay for two reasons: one, Apollo 11 didn’t have cameras in the lower stages to film the stage separations, and two, it probably looked almost identical to the Apollo 4 film anyway, because they used the same type of rocket – the Saturn V). All the dialogue you hear is from mission tapes, debriefings, and newscasts – even the narration was pulled from mission archives and news broadcasts. This approach caused some reviewers some heartache on popular movie rating sites, but to me, it creates a more immersive effect. And it’s laced together wonderfully. You also get on-screen readings of what is happening, with real-time countdown timers, altitude measurements, and speed. The music of the film isn’t overwhelming, but it adds to the effect. Most interesting was the lunar descent. To go from 47,000 feet above the moon to landing on it in under four minutes is heart-pounding to watch. And sure enough, the film mentions that Armstrong’s heart rate reached 150 at touch down! During the descent, you see Eagle’s altitude, speed, and the scariest part, remaining fuel. Even the “1202” alarm was called out well, and added to the suspense. Very well done.
The film was cleaned up impressively. It looks like a frame-by-frame digital cleanup of the original film, and it does not disappoint. It is not over-saturated, and the details are wonderful. Split screen is employed liberally, which adds to the immersion into the complexity and daring for the maneuver at hand. The audio is crisp and clear.
Again, as a space junkie and bona fide Apollo nerd, I’m extremely pleased, and the film surpassed my expectations.

In 1969, this movie shows the inside of the rocket capsule involved in the landing and leaving the moon. It must have been insurmountable risks on the astronauts in 1969 as they are propelled at 12 miles per second heading to the moon. People who are interested in the very first moon walk might enjoy this movie.

This documentary is a work of art. It was released to complement the 50th Anniversary Commemorations of one of mankind’s greatest achievements. The film makers compiled video footage from the actual first moon landing event in 1969. This footage was found in various archives around the world on 16mm right through to 65mm Film stock. This material was then compiled, edited and synchronized to the actual timeline of the event. There is no additional voice-over narration, you only hear recorded commentary from the actual people involved in the moment. If you are even remotely interested in this piece of our history I highly recommend this film over any of the many other videos available covering the event. Do yourself a favour, buy, watch and share the experience with anyone who may not have been alive when man first walked on the moon. You won’t regret it.
