   Good, but not as good as the book 🙂
   This is a good, solid film. What many reviews appear not to be aware of, is that there is a whole series of books. That’s why it’s set in Australia and also why they go to “Hell.” And the book/movie is referenced briefly in that they discuss that the books always better. The movie does a good job condensing. One reviewer mentioned the main lead being spacy, and out of it, making poor decisions. Honestly, those few times boost the movie tremendously as watching somebody who immediately turns into the perfect soldier just becomes another action flick. It’s still unrealistic in comparison to how the average person would react, but much better. I enjoyed watching the characters develop, and there was development and the effect of a sudden, drastic change from carefree teen to living behind enemy lines was addressed. It’s impossible to fully address all the emotions that would happen. Some of that is done with characters who are caricatures. And if you want a strong woman lead, you very much have it here. Strong, capable, smart, able to think on her feet. The ranch/farm kid background gives that more validity. There is a little drug use, but that’s portrayed very realistically and only gives the movie more credence. The explosions were overdone. Contained language and some gore.

   Dog ALERT: One Dog killed and one dog insinuated killed. Enough already!
   Character development is wonderful. Before our very eyes, we see this group of teens as carefree teenagers. As the movie progresses and the teens realize that the unimaginable and inconceivable has happened, all of them, even the ‘class clown’, come face to face with overnight maturity.
   The script believably pushes these teens to continue their evolution. For example, one of the girls is deeply religious and although she helps to set up traps for the enemy, she refuses to take a life. She is adamant that she will not, for any reason take a life. During this scene, I’m thinking that morality and obeying the commandants is wonderful, but little girl, this is WAR!
   I love how this script accurately portrays how a person changes according to their environment. It correctly demonstrates that even the highly moral have their limits. Every person has their line of, ‘enough is enough’, and this little girl is no exception. She finally steps over her own line that she drew in the sand and picks up arms, wiping out several enemy on her own. Astonishment and regret are both played across her face, but there is no going back for her now. Survival is very strong for most people.
   This movie is a testament to how strong we truly are, what we can accomplish if we stick together and work for the greater good.
   There are a couple of kids who have farming backgrounds. I absolutely believe this lifestyle hones the skills that lie beneath our surface. When I started having my babies, we moved from the city to a farm in ‘Nowhereland’. All three of my children have skills and attitudes that are strong, they are inventive, just like the teens in the movie. I have no doubt that my own kids could and would band together in much the same way. For me, this movie is quite realistic. Read through your history books and you will find people who have done that very thing.
   Yeah, these teens make a few mistakes here and there, one mistake turned deadly, others almost turned deadly.
   Many reviewers are quite unhappy with this film because they feel it doesn’t accurately portray human action and reaction.
   Oh. Yes. It. Does!
   What’s even more important, that no one knows how they are going to act/react in a situation until they are standing in that exact spot in that exact time, in an exact circumstance.
   I rather bet that just like the religious teen that adamantly stated she would not take a life, any of you would have that same astonished and full of regret expression on your face after you did something you were sure you could/would never do.
   Yes, it is very similar to Red Dawn, but it is also full of dissimilarity as well.
   Except for the senseless killing of a beautiful, sweet family dog, I took away a bit of eye-opening myself.

   If Russia Invaded Australia, Instead of Ukraine, This Story Could Be Non-Fiction
   Although the Patrick Swayze “Red Dawn” was more akin to the typical American audience, I suppose, I LOVED this story. I have the entire series, and it’s spin-offs in Kindle and in Audible format, this film is in my Top10 list.
   I love the backdrop, the female perspective, and the theme.
   Mind you, any decent Aussie film is going to score high with me, but this story, penned by a school principal down under is a fantastic exercise in the art.
   BOTTOM LINE
   Five stars out of five.

   AWESOME
   This movie is FANTASTIC. I saw it one time many years ago. I searched to purchase it and couldn’t find it. I was so happy to find it and be able to purchase it to watch over and over. I recommend this movie. It is really worth purchasing. You won’t be sorry.

   5 star for fast paced and interesting set up for a what if scenario. What if some teenagers were off on a camping trip and came home to find everyone gone. Each character is presented in a very interesting way and their interactions are believable and entertaining. There is violence, shock, comedy, and sorrow. The action is very well done and the story has definitely been set up for a possible tv series. If it ever gets made into a series, I would definitely buy it. An army moves in and captures all the people. If the people do not obey orders they get shot dead. The teens are spotted and chased and shot at and violence happens. They are scared and they need a plan and they struggle and they know what they have to do. They have to blow up the bridge that the enemy is using to get into their territory. The characters grow as they begin to realize that it is up to them to change the fate of their lives.

   Nexus.6 – April 2, 2025

   Ich muß gestehen, daß mir weder die australische Jugendbuchreihe, geschweige den deren Autor John Marsden bislang ein Begriff war, obwohl es mich vom Thema her sehr interessiert hätte. Jedoch ist mein Englisch einfach zu schlecht, als daß ich es mit Genuss im Original hätte lesen können, und in einer deutschen Übersetzung liegt (soweit mir bekannt) nur der erste Band im Carlson Verlag vor. Bedenke ich den riesigen Erfolg von Suzanne Collins’ “Panem”-Trilogie, welche sich in einem vergleichbar harten Umfeld bewegt und somit dieselbe Zielgruppe ansprechen dürfte, verwundert es schon weshalb sie nicht weitergeführt wurde. Möglicherweise wird sich dies noch ändern.
   Doch nun zum Film der eine fiktive Besetzung Australiens durch eine nichtgenannte asiatische Macht schildert. Einige Rezensenten beklagen den mangelnden Realismus, weil eine handvoll Jugendlicher den Kampf gegen ein ihr Land überfallendes Militärregime aufnehmen, ohne jegliche militärische Ausbildung. Dazu möchte ich kurz anmerken, daß vermutlich Dieselben den mangelnden Realismus bei den “Fünf Freunden” reklamieren werden, da diese ohne jegliche psychologische Profilerausbildung oder Schulung in polizei-taktischer Ermittlungsarbeit alle paar Wochen einen anderen Verbrecherring auffliegen lassen. Oder daß der hyperintelligente TV-“Kommissar Rex” sicherlich weit effizienter als sein Herrchen dessen Steuererklärung auszufüllen vermöchte. Und dreimal darf man raten welches Abenteuer der “??? Fragezeichen” (die nach 30 Detektivjahren noch immer nicht älter als maximal 20 sind), stärker nachgefragt wird? Das realistische Abenteuer dessen Titel dann ungefähr so lauten würde: “Die ??? Fragezeichen verbringen ein aufregendes Wochenende bei Tante Mathilda mit Kaffee und Kuchen auf dem Sofa” oder das unrealistische “Die ??? Fragezeichen jagen den einbeinigen Yeti”?
   Realismus hin oder her, am seltensten wird doch ein Werk wegen seiner Übereinstimmung mit der Wirklichkeit konsumiert, sondern um genau den “normalen” Alltag auszublenden. Und wenn dies auch nur halbwegs glaubhaft geschildert wird ohne allzu viele Logiklöcher aufzuweisen und es dem Autor/Regisseur darüber hinaus gelingt seine Figuren (die im vorliegenden Fall teils dramatische Wandlungen durchlaufen) und sich natürlicherweise völlig unvorbereitet in ihrer Zwangslage wiederfinden, nachvollziehbar agieren zu lassen, so habe ich gewiß kein Problem damit. Zudem möchte ich an Georg Elser erinnern, oder die Mitglieder der “Weißen Rose”, oder die “Edelweißpiraten” in Köln, um nur ein paar der Bekanntesten zu nennen, die in etwa im selben Alter und ebenfalls ohne jegliche militärische Ausbildung wie Marsdens Protagonisten waren, als sie völlig auf sich gestellt ihren Partisanenkampf gegen ein unmenschliches Regime aufnahmen. Im Film wird in der Zuflucht der Jugendlichen, der sogenannten “Hölle”, genau DIE existenzielle Frage gestellt, der sich letztlich alle Menschen mit Gewissen in solch einer Lage stellen müßen: “Verstecken und Abwarten oder offenen Widerstand leisten?”
   Mir jedenfalls hat der Film sehr gut gefallen. Es war einer der wenigen Filme welchen ich mir innerhalb weniger Tage ein zweites Mal ansah. Und es würde mich freuen, wenn die Verfilmung der (bislang) siebenbändigen Reihe fortgesetzt würde.

   John Marsden is a popular Australian author, who writes mainly for a younger generation, given he is a teacher by profession. Tomorrow, When the War Began is the first in a series of about ten novels that follows the development of a group of generally pampered young high school students from being naive fun loving kids, to eventually a seasoned guerrilla force who later come under the command of military forces from New Zealand and the uninvaded parts of Australia. Told from the point of view of their unofficial leader, an 18 year old farm girl called Ellie, it offers a sense of the sheer fear and panic of being thrust into an environment totally alien to them and their initial amateurish efforts to fight back against a professional foreign army and peoples who are occupying their home.
   Marsden has cleverly reversed the setting, where he is allowing us to have a taste of what it must be like for other war torn countries and peoples around the World, who are suffering under invading forces. Perhaps its even an attempt to look at our actions when, with the best intentions, we in the West enter wars in other countries and how the average person can change dramatically from being simple everyday people into becoming a ruthless fighting force to defend their homeland.
   Comparisons have been made with the 1984 American film Red Dawn, which has recently been remade. I think it looks deeper into the characters and the issues than that film, but then as an Australian I guess it hits home more. I understand that at least two film sequels are being made, which is good, because the story is much grander than the first film which was only the first book. Much of the story is about the changes that occur to these young people who are forced to grow up quick, rely on each other implicitly, and seriously confront and alter their sense of morality to suit the world in which they now live.
   And for those intrigued by the landscape in the film, I can assure you that almost all of Eastern and South Eastern Australia looks very much like those images. In fact you’d find Australia has an extraordinary diversity of environments, not just a central desert land with kangaroos and Emus.

   Tron – April 2, 2025

   Eine Gruppe Jugendlicher verbringt ein Campingwochenende in der australischen Wildnis und müssen feststellen, daß ihr Land von einer ausländischen Militärmacht überfallen und besetzt wird. Die Jugendlichen entschließen sich zum Widerstand und versuchen ihre Kleinstadt aus der Umklammerung des Gegners zu lösen. Zugegeben, die Story ist weder neu, noch sonderlich realistisch. Bereits 1984 erschien ein von der Thematik her fast identischer Streifen mit dem Titel “Die rote Flut”. Allerdings ist das australische Gegenstück nicht ganz so reaktionär und politisch engstirnig als das damalige Drehbuch, welches von John Millius verbrochen wurde. Die Story selbst ist genauso hanebüchen, kann aber aufgrund der guten darstellerischen Leistungen der noch recht jungen Darsteller und zumindest teilweise überzeugenden Dialoge Punkte sammeln. Einige Dialoge könnten allerdings auch aus einer beliebigen Daily Soap oder Teenieromanze entsprungen sein. Zum Glück halten sich diese aber in engen Grenzen und kommen nicht allzuoft vor. Die Actionsequenzen sind zwar eher spärlich gesäht, wurden aber dafür optisch gut in Szene gesetzt. “Tommorow when the war began” ist allerdings kein waschechter Kriegsfilm oder knallharter Actionstreifen wie man vielleicht zunächst erwartet hätte, sondern eher ein militaristisch angehauchtes “Stand by me – Das Geheimnis eines Sommers”. Die Jugendlichen werden mit einer für sie zunächst unfassbaren Situation konfrontiert, überwinden ihre Verzweiflung und Ängste und vollziehen mit ihrem Widerstand den Schritt zum Erwachsensein. Die Gewalt selbst im Film wird weder sonderlich brutal oder menschenverachtend dargestellt. Wohl ein Grund für die niedrige Altersfreigabe ab 12 Jahren. Der im Film vorkommende Patriotismus ist zudem nicht ganz so stark ausgeprägt wie in “Red dawn” und somit für uns Europäer goutierbarer als das Swayze-Vehicel Anfang der 80er. Das Bonusmaterial der vorliegenden Blu-Ray besteht u. a. aus einem vernachlassungswürdigen Making of, einigen entfallenen Szenen und einem alternativen Ende. Die Bild- und Tonqualität ist sehr gut und über jeden Zweifel erhaben. Fazit: Wer über die eher unglaubwürdige Grundsubstanz der Story hinwegsehen kann, wird dabei ziemlich gut unterhalten. Das offene Ende läßt zumindest auf eine Fortsetzung hoffen. Wär nicht das Schlechteste!
