How Palestine became Israel: Not perfect, but profound and impressive nonetheless.
EXODUS was an enormous (624 pp.) and enormously successful 1958 novel by Leon Uris that was transformed into this 1960 film, a smash hit in most countries except the UK, where its depiction of the ruling British forces in Palestine was considered offensive by some. It’s a long movie (208 mins.) and just barely misses the onus of “tedious epic,” probably owing to Otto Preminger’s meticulous direction and its cavalcade of stars who are also good actors. Paul Newman plays the *sabra* Ari Ben Canaan, who heads a commando force prior to Israeli independence; Eva Marie Saint is his on-again, off-again American girlfriend, widowed nurse Kitty Fremont; Jill Haworth plays Karen, the teenaged girl who lived through the German camps; Sal Mineo turns in a career-making performance as Dov, the equally terrorized and far more dangerous Holocaust survivor who turns to terrorism. The British are represented chiefly by Ralph Richardson, who plays the general gently sympathetic to the Zionist cause; and Peter Lawford, who plays perhaps too well the block-headed Major who’s a walking font of anti-Semitism.
Objections can and have been raised over the years: shouldn’t Paul Newman’s character at least have curly hair? Was Eva Marie Saint too old for the role? Did Preminger and the screenplay compress the story a little too much — such as insufficiently backgrounding the struggle between Ari’s father (Lee J. Cobb) and uncle (David Opatoshu), who became a reformer and a terrorist, respectively? But there’s no denying this is the best American film to tell the story of the formation of Israel out of Palestine in 1947-48. Make time to see this one.

My wifeâs favorite
Itâs an old movie that my wife watched years ago that she really cared for. It was great to be able to get a copy of it.

Great Story
My wife got interested in the
founding of Israel after WW 2 & I remember reading this book when I was in college. Although it is fiction it’s based on the Jewish migrants leaving Europe. Another perspective.

I Remember
I remember seeing the poster of this film with the silhouette of arms reaching through flames over the title logo EXODUS. That image designed by Saul Bass had a lasting impression on me. The haunting theme composed by Ernest Gold was on the radio and TV in those days. I never got to see EXODUS in the theatre but saw it perhaps five years or so later on the ABC Sunday night movie. I owned this film on VHS. I now own the DVD.
It remains impressive to this day. Like most films based on novels the script had to be condensed into a concise representation of the novel. The script writer or writers must pick and chose what aspect of the novel they wish to focus. In this case the Leon Uris’ novel was based on actual events thus leaving further reinterpretation of actual events interspersed with fictional characters as seen in the final film. What I like best about this film is the script by Dalton Trumbo. It is both free flowing and quite alluring. I would not quite call the characters in this film stereotypes but are representative of a concise point of view of the participants involved in the war for liberation and the founding of Israel.
As with most of director Otto Preminger’s films there is no discernable style. The only exception being, like with many of his best films, EXODUS is a polished looking, well crafted and visually good looking production. I like Eva Marie Saint’s role as Kitty Fremont, who put off by an anti-Semitic remark made by British Major Caldwell (Peter Lawford), decides to offer her services as a nurse to the Jewish refugees. Paul Newman as resistance leader Ari Ben Canaan is rather stoic in his determined performance. The best performance in the film is given by Sal Mineo as Dov Landau who is a tortured soul from his experiences from the Holocaust. Art designers Richard Day and Bill Hutchinson’s work and cinematographer Sam Leavitt’s images combined with composer Ernest Gold’s moving and vibrant score are highlights. I am pleased with this DVD edition. It is an improvement over my old VHS copy.
